For nearly 400 years, Robben Island was a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment for political "troublemakers" and social outcasts. During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality.
Some freedom fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs. Nelson Mandela was one of them.
Those imprisoned on the Island succeeded on a psychological and political level in turning a prison 'hell-hole' into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation.
Robben Island came to symbolize, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity. Today, you will be escorted around the island, and given insight into the past and how the human spirit triumphs.

Travel Testimonial
"We had the most amazing time on our honeymoon South Africa trip! We chose the Platinum South Africa itinerary and it was wonderful. The food was amazing everywhere we went, the timing of all of our transfers was great, the staff everywhere were exceptional and the views from each of our rooms was impeccable. We had the chance to see the Big 5 while we went on safari and we even watched whales from our room at the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town. A once in a lifetime experience!"
