March 30, 2006

After breakfast this morning you will make you own way to the Clocktower at the Waterfront for your
Robben Island Tour.

For nearly 400 years, Robben Island, 12 kilometers from Cape Town, was a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment.

It was here that rulers sent those they regarded as political troublemakers, social outcasts and the unwanted of society.

During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. The duty of those who ran the Island and its prison was to isolate opponents of apartheid and to crush their morale. Some freedom fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs.

Those imprisoned on the Island succeeded on a psychological and political level in turning a prison 'hell-hole' into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation. Robben Island came to symbolize, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity. Today, you will be escorted around the island by an ex-political prisoner, and given insight into the past and how the human spirit triumphs.

Tonight you will be transferred to The Spier Winery to have dinner at Moyo Restaurant.  Moyo at Spier, unlike any other restaurant, is set in Spier’s gardens on the werf. It is a magical dining experience to be savoured under a starlit sky – a sensory extravaganza! The tree-lined garden is filled with Bedouin tents and gazebos made from wrought iron, and tree houses almost reaching the clouds – clad with beautiful hand crafted copper water features.

After breakfast at your hotel you will be transferred back to Cape Town International Airport for your flight to Johannesburg.  Upon arrival you will be met and transferred overland to Pilanesberg National Game Reserve.  Dinner tonight will be served at the lodge.

Accommodation: Bakubung Bush Lodge (B, D)

A mere two hours drive north of Johannesburg and Pretoria and you'll find yourself in the tranquil heart of the bush.  Pilanesberg Game Reserve is home to Africa's giants - elephants, rhino and buffalo.  If you're fortunate, you may catch a glimpse of the stealthy leopard or lion, stately king of the bush. This is wild country indeed, but without the risk of malaria.

Monday,
April 3, 2006

This morning you will take part in an early morning open vehicle game drive before breakfast.  Pilanesberg National Park, which covers some 55 000 hectare, is the fourth largest in southern Africa. This malaria-free park is perched on the eroded vestiges of an alkaline volcanic crater - one of only three such craters in the world. On its undulating hills and everlasting open plains, you can get a glimpse of the 'Big Five', an abundance of animals and over 360 bird species.

After breakfast you will have the entire day to either relax around the pool or visit Sun City.  At Sun City there is a huge range of sporting and leisure facilities from floodlit tennis courts, horse riding, nature trails, lawn bowls as well as jet skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and sunset cruising at Waterworld. The Valley of the Waves offers an astonishing selection of activities, from surfing on two-meter high waves to the relaxing lazy river ride.  Sun City is also home to one of the largest casinos in the Southern Hemisphere, offering the thrill of roulette, blackjack, punto banco and craps.

The action never stops at Sun City with glamorous dancers, thrilling novelty acts and baffling displays of magic and illusion in the Sun City Theatre.  Choose from a great selection of shops offering curios, clothing, jewellery, souvenirs and mementos.

Gary Player has designed two 18-hole championship golf courses at Sun City to challenge all types of golfers from keen novice to skilled professional.  These golf courses offer the opportunity to savour the sights, sounds and smells of AFRICA!!!

Return to the lodge in time for your late afternoon/evening open vehicle game drive.   As well as the 'Big Five' you might also find the nocturnal brown hyena, cheetah, hippo, crocodile and even sable. Take a peek at the wildlife while visiting one of our watering holes.  Dinner tonight will be served at the lodge.
