Muhammad Ali Pasha restored the walls of the Citadel and built numerous palaces, schools, and government buildings in the 19th century. His masterpiece was the great mosque, which you'll see next. You'll also have time to visit the famous Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, where you can put your bargaining skills to the test. In the afternoon, spend time at the Egyptian Museum, an unrivaled warehouse of Pharaonic treasures. The museum exhibits over 120,000 objects, including the remarkable artifacts recovered by archeologist Howard Carter from the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

Drive out to Memphis to admire the colossal statue of Ramses II and the great Alabaster Sphinx. Nearby at Sakkara, view the Step Pyramid of Zoser I; dating from the 27th century BC, it is the oldest in the world. In the morning, visit the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the Valley of the Kings, the burial place of many New Kingdom Pharaohs. You'll also visit the towering Colossi of Memnon. These two giant seated figures are all that is left of Amenhotep III's mortuary temple. Among the many splendors of Karnak Temple is the Hypostyle Hall, the largest of any temple in the world, with its roof blocks supported by colossal columns 70 feet high. Fly back to Cairo later in the day and check into the Marriott Hotel.
